Kranjska or Krainer? Slovenia, Austria go to war over sausage

Slovenia has applied to the EU's European Commission for official recognition and protected status for the Kranjska klobasa, or "Krainer Wurst", a sausage it claims for its own.br br Facebook: Webpage: Twitter @nmatv: Tumblr: br Slovenia claims the sausage, of which a cheese-filled version known as a 'kaesekrainer' is extremely popular in Austria, was invented in Northern Slovenia in the 19th century.br br Complicating the claim is the fact that Slovenia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time.br br Should the EU side with Slovenia then Austria would be forced to change the name, much to the chagrin of kaesekrainer lovers in Vienna.br br The two countries have six months to come to a settlement in their battle over the pork-filled delicacies. Should they fail to do so then the EU Commission will be forced to make a ruling.
