Filipinos rally on Labour Day

About 3,000 workers marched along Manila's main avenues on Tuesday (May 1) to mark Labour Day.br br Protesters from various labour groups carried placards and banners demanding fair labour conditions and respect for workers' rights.br br They pressed for a 125 pesos (2.9 U.S. dollars) across-the-board wage increase.br br The minimum daily wage in Manila was last raised in May last year, bringing minimum daily wages to around 426 pesos (9.8 U.S. dollars).br br The Philippine government says it cannot guarantee an across-the-board wage hike as it could lead to the shutdowns of small scale businesses and push inflation, but has promised non-wage benefits like food and fuel subsidies for the labourers as part of mitigating measures from the rising prices.br br A third of people in the Philippines are under the poverty line and rising unemployment, low wages and poor labour conditions push millions of Filipino labourers to migrate and seek opportunities abroad.
