Court debates Umar Patek sentencing

Lawyers representing Indonesian militant Umar Patek say the prosecution's call for a life sentence is "too heavy."br br Patek is accused of involvement in the 2002 Bali nightclub bombings that killed more than 200 people.br br He's also accused of mixing chemicals to produce 13 bombs that detonated in five churches in Jakarta on Christmas Eve 2000, killing 15 people.br br Patek's lawyer said the prosecution's investigation ignored several facts.br br (SOUNDBITE) (Bahasa Indonesia) LAWYER ASLUDIN HATJANI, SAYING:br br "Prosecutors, in this case, disregarded facts that came out during the court proceedings. Prosecutors didn't give any credence to witnesses who spoke in support of the defendant."br br Patek, who is also wanted in the United States, the Philippines and Australia, attended a training camp in Pakistan for Afghan militants in 1991.br br Sarah Sheffer, Reuters.
