Amnesty International slams Taliban shooting of school girl

Malala Yousufzai is rushed to hospital on Tuesday, her young life in the hands of these paramedics.br br The 14-year-old Pakistani girl was shot and seriously wounded as she was leaving her school in Pakistan's Swat Valley.br br The Taliban claimed responsibility -- citing Malala's promotion of education for girls as the reason behind the attack.br br The shooting has been met with shock and outrage, both within Pakistan and abroad.br br Speaking in Hong Kong, an Amnesty International official strongly condemned the violence.br br (SOUNDBITE) (English) AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL ASIA PACIFIC DIRECTOR, CATHERINE BABER, SAYING:br br "Well the shooting of Malala is a shocking act of violence that Amnesty International condemns in the strongest possible terms. We understand she is doing well in hospital after an operation to remove the bullet."br br Yousufzai rose to prominance for speaking out against the Pakistani Taliban at a time when even the government seemed to be appeasing the hardline Islamists.br br She's a recipient of Pakistan's highest civilian award, and has been nominated for numerous international awards for child activists.br br The Taliban are opposed to girls' education, and have long attacked and forced the closure of schools that enroll female students.
