Gaza schools reopen after Israeli offensive

It appears a school day like any other.br br But this is Gaza, where even the schools are vulnerable to attack. (shows damage to school buliding)br br Children went back to class on Saturday after a truce between Israel and Hamas appeared to have ended an eight day offensive that killed 139 Gazans - including 34 children - and five Israelis.br br The headmistress of El Zaitoun school said teachers were trying to give the children a normal school day.br br (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) HEADMISTRESS OF ZAITOUN SCHOOL, NAHEDA SILMI:br br "We tried to renovate the school and keep the students away from the damage. Windows and doors were damaged. We are trying to create a real school day for students after all that's happened."br br With over half of the 1.7 million Gazans aged under 18, the Palestinian enclave has one of the youngest populations in the world.br br More than 200,000 students are receiving education at U.N. schools, the majority of which suffer from over crowding and 'double shifting' - where one building serves two separate sets of teachers and students.
