North Korea marks Kim death anniversary

PLEASE NOTE: EDIT CONTAINS CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIALbr br It's a year to the day since the announcement of the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.br br His son and successor Kim Jong-un marked the anniversary with a visit to the newly-renovated Kumsusan Palace.br br The country's state-run broadcaster KRT showed video of Kim and his wife at the re-opening ceremony for the building.br br The bodies of the new leader's father and grandfather lie permanently in state here.br br The statue of Kim Jong-il is a new addition alongside that of North Korea's founder Kim Il-sung.br br North Korean TV also showed Kim Jong-un at a memorial service outside the Palace.br br Tens of thousands of troops and civilians turned out for the event in the capital, Pyongyang.br br A siren sounded to mark the start of several minutes of silent remembrance.br br Trains and even ships were halted as the nation came to a brief memorial standstill.br br Kim's death was announced to the world on December 17th 2011.br br His funeral took place after ten days of mourning.br br Kim Jong-un was crowned 'the great successor' soon after.
