No end to plight of Shias in Gilgit

Europe, Jan 28: They call Shias 'Kafirs' - or those who don't believe in God - and kill them mercilessly. Shias, a minority community in Pakistan, continue to face atrocities perpetrated by Pakistan-backed Sunni militant outfits. Their troubles started in early 1980s when Zia-ul-Haq sponsored anti-Shia forces brought about a socio-political polarization among the communities. But, a permanent trust deficit was created in May 1988 when tribal Lashkars, after receiving a nod of approval from General Zia, abducted local women and killed thousands of Shias in Gilgit. The killings have been repeated endlessly in Chilas, Kohistan and Mustang.
