Columbus Students Buy, Eat Right

Watch more and discuss:br br Columbus Magnet School first grader Joel says his school has "any kinds of fruits and vegetables that you want to eat." br br From blueberries to Brussels sprouts, Columbus' annual "Big Bag Market" gives first graders the chance to learn, and eat right. br br "They learn all the ways of how to run a business," says first grade assistant Nancy Stewart. "We just happened to choose a market because we teach about fresh fruits and vegetables." br br The market is a product of science and social studies classes on farming and plants. There's math in it, too: students set prices and take in profits. br br "what each coin is worth, how to make change," Stewart explains. "It works right into our curriculum." br br "People don't have to go to another shop," says Joel. "If this is closer, they can just come downstairs and get food." br br Students even advertise the market, and survey the school on what foods to sell. And then, they eat. br br "You'd be surprised the kids that come down and buy bags of Brussels sprouts because they actually love Brussels sprouts," says Stewart. "And that's the one vegetable I won't eat." br br "Healthy food is good for you," says Joel. "It has good stuff in it, and it helps you get stronger.
