A study reveals that caffeine in plants draws bees.

Researchers have found that bees are attracted to plants with a little bit of caffeine in their nectar.

Plants use a few different methods to get pollinators to return to their flowers, like making their nectar sweet with sugar, or producing a nice fragrance.

Geraldine Wright, a specialist on honeybee brains from Newcastle University in England said: “The plant is using this as a drug to change a pollinator’s behavior for its own benefit.”

Psychoactive compounds like caffeine have an effect on brain function.

Caffeine is a stimulant to humans and bees alike.

According to the study when bees are exposed to small amounts of caffeine, their memory function is slightly enhanced, which might be a strategy to get the bees to remember the plant and come back to it later for more nectar.
