I think that the best Arizona business lawyers have a little bit of business blood in 'em. A lot of lawyers go to law school because they don't want to have risk and they don't want to be bothered with the kinda things business owners are bothered with everyday. What I try to do is understand the things that make business owners tick. There's a lot of risk out there. Legal risk is one of them, of course, but spending $1 million to fix one particular legal problem, even if it gets the risk down to completely zero, often isn't the best place to put your business dollar. You may want to look at it and say, "I've got marketing risk. I've got marketshare risk. I've got risk with my partners. I've got risk with my employees. And I have this much to invest towards taking care of my legal issues. What's the best way for me to do that?"

Those are the kind of engagements that I enjoy doing because I feel like I'm a little bit of a partner with my clients, an attorney, but also a counselor, a helper, somebody who's really helping them get to success. Not just a guy who, "Oh my gosh, it's the lawyer. I gotta pay him an hourly fee again," but somebody who hopefully is adding some value and a valued member of the team.
