And here it is— the second Equestria Girls movie, Rainbow Rocks! Not many people in the fandom probably wanted this, but what we received was most definitely better than the original. With improvements in just about every aspect over EQG1, this movie definitely left many wanting more. From a nice arc for Sunset Shimmer, to great comedy, to fun villains, to numerous background character shoutouts, this movie delivered in a lot of aspects. The songs and soundtrack were no exception, will Daniel Ingram and William Anderson really stepping up their game for this one! With over 10 songs, this movie was more music-packed than the original, and will leave you humming the tunes for days afterward. In terms of number and length of tracks, the BGM in the movie was a little less than the first, which is to be expected with the amount of more time the songs take up. But what we did get from the BGM was fantastic, introducing a couple new amazing themes which are reprised throughout the movie. NOTE: The songs in this movie are mixed differently than any other songs in this series. Backing vocals are in the stereo channels, but addtional backing vocals, and only a few instruments are in most of the surround channels. This means that a true instrumental for any song in this movie is unfortunately imossible. Sorry!\r

The original star of the movie before its release, “Battle (of the Bands)” was the first song previewed in the months leading up to the movie. The song is definitely one of the more unique ones of the series in terms of style. Taking place in the cafeteria, just like the star song from the first movie, this track combines both the vocal stylings and production of a broadway musical number, with the synth and chorus of a current Top-40 song.\r

Daniel Ingram does a fantastic job of interweaving siren-like vocals all throughout the backing vocals of this piece. It really gives you the feeling of exactly what is going on here—brainwashing. After the vocal beginning, the backing track of the song leads into an awesome, smooth electric guitar part for the first few verses. The drums begin to increase, with a very loud bass drum part. As we get into the chorus, more electronic instruments are added to the song, as the guitar gets more distortion. The production value on this song is incredible, and much credit for this goes to Caleb Chan.\r

By far my favorite part of the song is definitely the choir during the chorus—especially the final repeat of it. Its not very often we hear strong male vocals in an MLP song, and this song utilizes them beautifully. The feeling you get when the choir joins in the final bridge is incredible. Major props to Trevor Hoffman, who did the choral arrangement for this song!\r
