Ban Ki-Moon in Tehran for Non-Aligned Movement Summit

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrives in Tehran to attend the 16th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit.

The Non-Aligned Movement summit of 120 nations is being held at a time when Iran finds itself at odds with the West over Tehran's support for President Bashar al-Assad.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.N. SECRETARY GENERAL, BAN KI-MOON, SAYING:

"Iran has a very important role, crucial important role to play in the region, particularly when it comes to the Syrian situation."

Speaking to Press TV soon after his arrival Ban Ki-Moon said he looks forward to the opportunity to speak with Iranian leaders.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.N. SECRETARY GENERAL, BAN KI-MOON, SAYING:

"As the Secretary General I am very pleased to visit Iran and looking forward to having a very constructive and useful discussions and meetings with senior leadership of Iran."
