When invited round to someone’s house you are expected to take some small gifts with you; usually flowers or chocolates for the hostess and a bottle of table wine for the host. Any good quality flowers will do except for chrysanthemums or lilies – because these are associated with funerals – or red flowers – because they are linked to the revolution – and never 13 of anything because it’s considered an unlucky number.

If for some reason you are unable to bring a gift for the hostess it is acceptable to send flowers the following day.

For dinner parties you should never turn up early but ought to arrive no later than 15 minutes after the time you were given at the invitation. Other parties or large social gatherings are more flexible. It is best to arrive between 30 minutes to half an hour after the stipulated time.

Unless otherwise stated you should dress conservatively. There is very little difference between the clothes the Portuguese wear for business and for socializing. However, that does not apply to the conversation. Never talk shop at a dinner party unless your host specifically asks you to do so.

Remember: a return invitation is always appreciated.
