Castleford Tigers fought back from 18-0 down to earn victory over Widnes Vikings at the Select Security Stadium.

The hosts had lead early on with tries for Patrick Ah Van, Macgraff Leuluai and Corey Thompson, before a Denny Solomona hat-trick for Cas.

Ryan Boyle, Luke Gale and Paul McShane all crossed for Tigers after the break, but Lloyd White's late try could not spark a fightback for the home side.

Defeat extended early season leaders Widnes's losing run to four matches.

Victory saw Castleford win on the road for the first time since beating Hull FC 31-24 in February.

Gale added to his try with five conversions to contribute 14 of Castleford's points.

Widnes remain fifth, four points off top spot and one point above seventh-placed Tigers.

Widnes boss Denis Betts: "After the first five or 10 minutes we just went a little bit soft on ourselves.

"There was a bit of ill-discipline and areas of our game where we gave them field-position too easily.

"They had nothing to lose and they came back. It was a massively disappointing day.

"Defensively we were slack from the start. We just didn't control the ruck right through to the end of their sets."

Castleford head coach Daryl Powell: "I don't think we kicked the ball for half-an-hour and you know you're going to be in trouble if that happens.

"Widnes were playing pretty sharp and putting us under pressure and we just needed to get a foothold in the game really and complete some sets.

"I've rarely seen a changing room as buzzing at half-time with the players just talking about the game. They felt they had every chance of winning it, you could just sense it.

"We just needed to tidy our game up but at 18-0 it looked quite difficult to do."

Widnes Vikings is an English professional rugby league club based in Widnes, Cheshire which currently plays in the Super League, the top tier of European rugby league. Prior to the 1997 season the club was known simply as Widnes and had a long history of success in the sport. The club plays its home matches at the Select Security Stadium.

Widnes was one of the original twenty-two rugby clubs that formed the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895, making them one of the world's first rugby league teams. The club enjoyed a period of success in the 1970s, 80s and early 90s, and were frequently described as "Cup Kings" reaching the Challenge Cup final 7 times in 10 years between 1975 and 1984. In 1989, after winning their third Rugby League Championship, Widnes became the first official World Club Champions by beating the Australian champions Canberra Raiders 30-18 at Old Trafford.

Their traditional nickname is "The Chemics" after the main industry in Widnes, but the club also use their more modern nickname, "The Vikings". They have a strong local rivalry with Warrington Wolves, and matches between the two clubs are often prolific encounters

Castleford Tigers RLFC are an English rugby league club based in Castleford, West Yorkshire that plays in the rugby league top-tier Super League. Formed in 1926, the club were founder members of the 1996 Super League taking part in the inaugural competition and have won a number of major honours including the Challenge Cup four times. The club's most recent major trophy was the now-defunct 1994 Regal Trophy.

Castleford have a rivalry with neighbours Featherstone Rovers, Wakefield Wildcats and Leeds Rhinos. The club have been based at Wheldon Road in Castleford, since 1927, after moving from Sandy Desert in Lock Lane, Castleford.

The club's home colours are currently black and orange, although historically the home colours are black and amber.
