I started out my channel with a clear mindset and I was motivated. Start out with that first. If you're making a YouTube channel with no intention for it to last, don't make it at all, unless of course you just want to try it out. If you want to take your channel seriously and gain a fanbase, you NEED to make sure you know what work is needed to be put in and how YouTube works.

It was a process for me. Before even starting my YouTube channel, I watch editing tutorials for Camtasia Studio 8 so I would know how to edit my videos before actually recording one. I learned how to record gameplay with OBS. I learned how to record audio with Audacity. That is very important; first learn the basics and progress from there.

The more time you spend on YouTube actually TRYING to learn, learn about editing, making your content better etc.. the more subscribers you will end up with. I always see a ton of people saying they're on YouTube for years and years now but only have a couple of videos.

Let me end it off with this. YouTube is not easy if you want to be serious with it. You must be prepared to edit + record + prepare + render for hours! Also, communicating with the subscribers you already have is also very important as they are more likely to stay active on your channel. But the most IMPORTANT factor to getting subscribers is CONSISTENCY. Post videos as often as possible (just make sure their decent quality) and the views will be racking in sooner or later.

This is advice that I wish I could've used to get my first 100 subscribers! If you were wondering how long it took me, it took roughly 4 weeks. Hopefully this helps you get you some subscribers :)
