The futuristic Ruriden columbarium in Tokyo's Shinjuku houses 2,046 illuminated glass Buddha altars corresponding to drawers storing ashes of the deceased, with progressive head monk Yajima Taijun explaining the high-tech temple, Wednesday.

An IC card allows the owner of the altar containing the ashes to access the building and light up the corresponding statue. Ashes are stored for 33 years before being buried below the Ruriden.
