While no new Sonic the Hedgehog movie updates regarded the cast has been announced, a lot of the franchise's established players will likely return. As with the first two installments, Ben Schwartz will return to voice the titular character, Sonic the Hedgehog. Alongside him, rounding out the iconic trio will be Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Miles "Tails" Prower and Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna. In terms of human characters, it is expected both James Marsden and Tika Sumpter will return as Tom and Maddie Wachowski, Sonic's human family.

While Jim Carrey portrayed Sonic's iconic villain, Dr. Robotnik, in the first two movies, it is unclear whether he will return for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 given that Carrey claims he is retiring from acting though Schwartz recently voie his hope for Carrey's return for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. However, the filmmakers have confirmed, even if Carrey doesn't return, his role will not be recast. Adam Pally will likely return as Wade Whipple, the deputy sheriff of Green Hills as well as Natasha Rothwell as Maddie's sister Rachel. In the meantime, it's unclear whether Lee Majdoub's Agent Stone will return given his role as Robotnik's aide.
