Vijay Prakash is a playback singer from Mysore who moved to Mumbai in 1996. He has sung in many films such as Slumdog Millionaire, Force, Couples retreat, Blue, Yuvvraaj, Swades, Kaal, Lakshya, Matrubhoomi, Cheeni Kum, Raavan, Faltu,Love you Mr Kalakar. He is also one of the most sought after singer in the South following a series of hit songs and awards in 2010-2011.

He is one of four singers credited for the song, "Jai Ho", which won the 2008 Academy Award for Best Original Song. Specifically, he sang the portion with the words "Jai Ho" that takes an extended high pitch at numerous junctures of the song. The Song also won the 52nd "Grammy Awards" in the category "Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media. He attended the Grammys with A.R.Rahman in Los Angeles that year. He has also hosted and judged various reality shows down south.

Early Life

Vijay Prakash was born in Mysore on 21-02-1976 in a family of musicians, composers, singers who served the cause of Carnatic classical music.His grandfather Karnataka Kala Tilaka Shri Laxmipathy Bhagavatar composed approximately 300 Kritis in Carnatic Classical style in Telugu, Kannada and Sanskrit languages.

His parents Karnataka Kala Shree Shri L. Ramasesha and Smt. R. Lopamudra are the founders of Nataraja Sangeeta Shala a music institution that has trained many talented Singers to the music field in Mysore. Vijayaprakash got his initial training from his Grandfather and his parents. He later on learnt from Smt. R. Vedavalli of Chennai for two years. He has performed in well-known sabhas like Gaana Bharati, Shri. Thyagaraja Sangeeta Sabha, Naada Brahma Sangeeta Sabha, J.S.S. Sangeeta Sabha etc. in and around Mysore.

His devotion for music and the thirst to learn more led him to give up his engineering studies and come to Mumbai in the quest of Music. When he first came to Mumbai in 1996 he came under the tutelage of Shri. Suresh Wadkar who exposed him to Hindustani classical and other light forms of Indian Music. Prakash was a participant in the program Sa Re Ga Ma on Zee TV, hosted by Sonu Nigam. He made it to the mega-finals in 1999.
