Tango del Sueño - for Violin and Piano, Op. 110 might come as a bit of a surprise to those who’ve heard some of my music. Most of my music is based on a harmonic and melodic language I settled on in my early 20s. But in Nov. 2014 I woke up in the middle of the night with this Latin American melody playing in my mind. I didn’t have any trouble getting the basic tune down on paper. But the fact that I’d “imagined” the tune at all was odd to me - and that it was so firmly stuck in my mind. The next day I started to see where it would take me. Once I’d written the piece for violin and piano I wanted to figure out what kind of a dance it was. After checking with several composer friends, Julie Roseman told me it was a tango. I guess I’d suspected that. The melody seems to come from the early 20th century – and is full of charm and grace.
